History

The Merseyside Supporters Tournament was held for the first time in May 2006.  The tournament was set up for eight teams, but a late pull-out left FC Rearguard (Tranmere) filling two teams, one was generously helped out with players from other teams when possible.  Rather than take anything away from the day it added to the fun with a Tranmere A vs Tranmere B final ending up as a mix of Tranmere players left standing with Shrewsbury and Stockport lads thrown in to somehow assemble two sides for a friendly match to finish the day.  There was no escaping the Losers Plate for the hosts though.

Typically it was Liverpool who made the short trip accross the River Mersey to lift the trophy.

The second year saw things run much more smoothly with demand to enter much higher.  Liverpool, Everton, Stockport, Grimsby Town, Rochdale and of course Tranmere returned from year one whilst Chester City were also added to the mix as well as the first team from outside of England to enter with Scottish side Motherwell coming for a whistle-stop stay on Merseyside for the weekend.

It was Rochdale who were the winners this time as they beat holders Liverpool 2-1 after extra-time.  Chester City took the Losers Plate after narrowly beating/losing to Stockport to it!

Testimonials

Wanna see what other teams have made of the day in past years?  Here's a selection of the comments we got back.

"Thank you so much for hosting the tournament yesterday. A good time was had by all. The day was organised very well.  Thanks again, see you next year when we will try to defend the trophy."
Craig Milnes, Manager of Rochdale Supporters Team

"Thanks for having us - will be back next year if it doesn't clash with any 'Well fixtures. Hopefully a few of the boys from the other teams can join us for a night out next time! All the best guys - hope a good sum of cash was made for the charities."
Frazzle, Manager of Motherwell Supporters Team

"Thanks from Stockport as well to Rich, Billzy and the rest of the Tranmere
lads for hosting us once again.  Another good day out, although this tournament doesn't seem to agree with us as we ended up in the wooden spoon knockout once again!

"Thanks to all the teams we played - Motherwell, Everton, Tranmere, Grimsby
and Chester for a number of hard fought matches.  Look forward to returning (and hopefully doing better!) next year."

Des Hinks, Stockport County Supporters Team

"All at Chester would like to thank the organisers and hosts at
Tranmere for a very enjoyable day, and one that we hope has raised a
substantial amount for the Claire House Childrens' Hospice.

"The day was very enjoyable, as we eventually got into the swing of
thigs against Tranmere and Stockport in the two losers' knockout
matches, and we pushed them both close!"

Nathan Auty, Chester City Supporters Team
